Pakefield Primary

Design & Technology

At Pakefield Primary School the D&T curriculum aims to develop the pupil's creativity, technical and practical expertise in order to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. From EYFS to Year 6 the D&T curriculum will introduce children to a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

Children will develop their skills by using creativity and imagination in design and test products to solve real world, relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values.

Pakefield pupils will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. They will develop an understanding of technology through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, thinking critically about its impact on society and on daily life and the wider world.

Pakefield Primary school follows the National Curriculum for Design Technology which aims to:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook

Pakefield Primary uses Kapow Primary’s Design and Technology scheme of work. A clear progression of skills is shown within the Kapow scheme including that of mixed year groups. Through Kapow’s scheme of work, pupils use design briefs in the following five skill areas:

  • Mechanisms
  • Structures
  • Textiles
  • Cooking and nutrition
  • Electrical systems (KS2)

Each of these key areas (along with the design process: design, make and evaluate) are revisited again and again allowing pupils to revisit and build on previous learning from the previous years.
