French

The National Curriculum for MFL aims that children will be taught to:
- Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
- Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
- Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
- Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences.
- Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
- Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
- Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
- Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
- Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
- Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English
MFL at Pakefield Primary School
Our teaching is supported by the use of software ‘Rigalo’ provides teachers with resources to support the content of lessons. This excellent resource provides opportunities for reading, writing, speaking and listening within all units. Other concrete resources are also used such as flash cards, visual aids and dictionaries provide the children with rich learning experiences Across the units of work children are provided with opportunities to
- Make links to prior learning
- Make use of concrete resources to support their learning and deepen their understanding.
- Opportunities to listen to, read, write and speak, in French, using talking partners, group work, or whole class experiences.
- Make links to other countries, including traditions and religious celebrations.
- Use of differentiation to tailor learning opportunities to provide support and to further the understanding of those who are more confident and able within this area of the curriculum.

Progression and implementation of MFL at Pakefield Primary School
Below is a road map showing the progression of MFL teaching across the school. Discrete French lessons are timetabled into the curriculum from Year 3 to Year 6, however evidence of teaching of MFL can been seen within the Early Years, through the use of our ‘Language of the Term’ focus.
